Get outside and play.
Riding bikes, collecting rocks from our creek, playing kickball in the front yard... or football in the back... as a child I played and worked outside year round. Growing up on a farm, the animals - the crops - the garden - the big brother -almost all my memories are outside ones. Chasing lightening bugs with cousins late night, fishing, coon hunting, learning to drive in the hay field or following a tobacco setter. Building winter snowmen, or sledding, winter didn't stop us.
As an adult the outside continues to call me... come dig in the raised bed dirt, string a hammock, sit on the patio, go camping, build a fire or take a walk. A favorite walking spot beckoned me to a morning walk today. It's a holiday, but the body clock did not notice. "The earlier you get up, the more day you have," a wise friend once told me.
Instead of wishing for a later sleep, the walking shoes and I headed for Barfield Cresent Park. A favorite place to escape, especially on a cool morning. Starting with a freshness, then ending with sweat on your back, fresh air in the lungs and steps measured on the FitBit.
Barfield Crescent Park is a beautiful 430-acre community park located in the southern area of Murfreesboro, TN. Just a short drive for me to find picnic shelters, baseball fields, disc golf, playgrounds, a grass volleyball court, horseshoe pits, tether ball -- and my favorite two things: Over 7 miles of hiking trails and the Wilderness Station.
There are both paved and unpaved opportunities to explore, stretch your legs, get steps in, walk, run, jog. Many folks walk their dog and today I met a gentleman with a Yorkie -Poo named Ruffy. He told me when they first got him he only weighed a pound. "It seemed naming him Hercules was a little overkill," he said.
Hardwood forest, limestone outcrops, a Stones River Overlook, and a back country campground all await. The Marshall Knob Trail, Valley View and Rocky Path are unpaved trail options. Red, white or blue markings. Home to Barred owls, deer, turkeys, or an occasional snake, bobcat, or coyote.
