Feature: Dessert Momma

Allow me to introduce Phillis Kirk. I have been in church with this wonderful lady for years. She's sweet and kind and can make a MEAN cake...in all the good ways.

 

When did you first start baking?
I started baking when I was 8 years old with my mother and grandmother. I remember standing on a stool making cookies with my mother at 8. I also made dessert for my family most every night when I turned 10 years old while preparing dinner with my Mother. My father loved dessert. He passed away when I was 20 years old to Lymphoma.  Baking helps keep his memory alive.

What inspired you to start Dessert Momma?
My lifelong joy of baking has allowed me to enjoy a part-time job doing what I love.

Other than cakes, what other types of desserts do you make?
I offer a variety of cupcakes, cookies and sweet breads.

Do you do bespoke/custom flavors?
Yes. I have a variety of flavors of cake and buttercream.  I don’t use fondant, only buttercream.

Do you cater to special dietary needs?
Gluten free only. I provide Chocolate or Vanilla as options.

What price do your cakes/desserts start at?
I offer many sizes of cakes that will accommodate a few guests to many guests.  My prices depend on the size and flavor as to the cost. All of my cakes are 3 layers.

What is your favorite cake and frosting combination?
My favorite is Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese frosting.  I love the older traditional cakes such as Coconut, Red Velvet and Hummingbird Cake.

Do you deliver and set up?
Yes, I do charge a delivery fee that includes setup. I do ask that the florist arrange the flowers on the wedding cake.

What tips or advice can you give to couples who are ordering their cake and desserts?
It isn’t necessary to order a serving of dessert for every attendee because some won’t eat it.  Also, if you’re slicing your cake or serving desserts later in the reception, assume some guests may leave early.

What was your worst baking disaster?
I added too much sugar to a homemade chocolate cake and it fell flat in the pan while baking.
