Ok, so I’m gonna be totally honest! I never really thought about the power of blood until I didn’t have enough. Blood is amazing and to say that there is power in the blood is an understatement!
It has LOTS of jobs. It carries oxygen, helps maintain body temp and sends antibodies to fight infection, just to name a few. I bet you take those things for granted, just like I did, until a few months ago!
It wasn’t until I didn’t have enough blood that I even began to think about how much I needed blood. And even more, how grateful I was to those who give blood. I remember recently lying in a hospital bed for over 12 hours, waiting for blood. As the American Red Cross searched for just the perfect match, I began to realize that only a gift from a blood donor, a free gift, could fix my problem.
My friend and mentor, Rita Davenport always says, “If money can fix it it’s not a problem!” I agree with her, but suddenly I realized I had a problem. As I waited for the Red Cross to find a match, I realized I needed a perfect match- a life-giver! Something money couldn’t buy!
I can’t express how loved I felt in this moment. Numerous friends and family offered to be tested for a match, even one who wasn’t my blood type, gave in my honor. Now that’s a friend!
I finally convinced the doctor to let me go home and wait until they found a match. Thank goodness they obliged because it was a LONG three days before I got the call. Back to the hospital I went to receive the gift of blood from a total stranger.
It’s funny the thoughts that go thru your mind when you receive such a gift. Wonder if they realize what a “big deal” their gift is? Wonder if they wonder who’s getting their blood? Wonder what they look like? What they do for a living? If they have a family? Wonder what inspired them to be a donor? Had they or a family member been a recipient? Or did they just want a free t-shirt? Lol I wondered all of these things. But the one thing I didn’t wonder about was about their heart. They definitely had a giving heart.
“There is power, power, wonder-working power
In the blood of the Lamb
There is power, power, wonder-working power
In the precious blood of the Lamb”
He shed His precious blood for you and me! You see, that was His sole purpose for coming down from heaven…to live a sinless life, to shed His blood and suffer death on the cross as payment for our sins, so that we could live eternally with Him in heaven. Oh yes, there is power in the blood, and I am grateful!
I don’t know about you but that gets my blood pumping! While we won’t accomplish a sinless life, and, thankfully don’t have to suffer death on a cross, we can be givers of life by sharing what He has done for us with those we know and meet. I hope this inspires you as it does me!
